Writing the
Butler Way

Butler Writers is an outreach of the Butler University English Department and MFA Creative Writing program that seeks to empower and amplify the voices of high school students in the Indianapolis community by connecting them with mentors and methods for self-expression.

Since its inception in 2011, this Jefferson Award-winning initiative has generated more than 1,800 mentee-mentor contact hours annually and served more than 1,500 unique students at our IPS partner schools.

As we continue to develop our programming, we hope to reaffirm how relationship building, positive reinforcement, and interconnectivity through language can be vital strategies for helping to serve the diverse needs of urban school districts.

The Butler Writers Studio, a college-style writing center, opened at Shortridge HS in 2018, serving more than 800 students our first semester.

Butler students involved with the program are called to be better citizens who actively engage with the complexities of public education, both in the classroom and at the ballot box.

Young poets & storytellers who are a part of the Butler Writers after-school club are published in Reverberations, a literary magazine in print and online. Click below to read their work.

Mentors are trained to identify & serve the needs of all students, whether this means lending a pen or simply an open ear.
